The Song Beneath the Words

Imagine if silence were not always absence.

If movement were not always distraction.

If the child who did not answer in our language was not assumed to have no song.

Tiny pieces colliding.

Nothing more.

Yet every slight rotation revealed something entirely new.

A perfect mosaic.

Symmetrical.

Unexpected.

Beautiful for reasons I couldn't explain.

As a child, I kept waiting for it to repeat itself.

Surely there were only so many possibilities. The same colored fragments lived inside the tube. The same mirrors reflected them. If I turned it enough times, I thought, eventually I would find my way back to an earlier pattern.

I never did.
